HOW TO DESIGN A TOXIC-FREE NURSERY

Every moment is special – from buying the first pair of the tiniest socks (ever!) to choosing the crib where the little one will become not so little in a very short while. Every choice made as a parent-to-be is taken with great care, aiming to make the best possible decision for the comfort and the well-being of the baby. It all starts with a toxic-free nursery.

Growing, exploring, and self-discovery take place in the nursery. Creating a toxic-free environment for our baby is vital for its development. Materials and textiles play a key role in the first encounters of the baby with the home setting. That’s why it’s crucial to make sure the nursery of our newborn lacks any materials emitting Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). 

Getting rid of Volatile Organic Compounds

These are compounds emitted in the form of gas from particular solids or liquids and can harm our health. Symptoms of VOCs exposure could range from headaches to nausea and allergic skin reactions. VOCs are found in various wall paints, building materials, insulations, chemically produced textiles and plastics, cleaning materials, etc.

Materials containing zero VOCs could be woods and metals with no finish. However, if the product does have a finish – make sure to look for the substance used for that purpose, such as water-based solutions, milk paint, or natural oil-based pigments. 

The Cotton Solution

Although trying to create a completely  toxic-free nursery could be a challenging task these days, bringing it to a minimum is an aim that we can achieve with the help of natural materials such as organic cotton.

Newborns sleep around 75% percent of the time so the fabric of their bedding must be a priority when finding a zero VOC solution for the nursery. Organic cotton is an extremely breathable material that keeps sweat away from us, making it perfectly suitable for newborns and people with skin sensitivities. With its natural hypoallergenic characteristics, on the other hand, organic cotton products contribute to a toxic-free nursery environment.

Choosing an organic cotton mattress, for example, makes not only the nursery safer from toxins but also the planet. The material is environmentally sustainable, durable, and biodegradable, causing no harm to the soil since it requires no pesticides and chemicals to grow and its watering can be completely dependable on the rain.

From our mother’s goodnight kiss to the friends’ sleepovers, the nursery is the space where comfort and safety reign. But before posters of celebrities, dark curtains, and a whole drum set appears in it, as a parent, you still have the voice of reason for at least another 10 to 12 years.
