Guiding our customers through the process of creating their bespoke cushions, we have come upon some common questions and we assembled a small but very useful list of tips to help you get the cushion that will let your home sparkle with joy.
Choose the fabric and the color of your cushion
We offer a variety of fabrics and colors: from our GOTS certified all-natural cotton fabric, through our Oeko-Tex certified Bella and Max Cotton, to the luxurious rich Velvet. Did we mention the beautiful pastel colors of our Dyed Linen? Above all, we can also work with your own fabric, making sure the only limit is imagination!
We’ve selected tyger that all offer extreme durability. If you want something more sturdier and a more structured look, go for the thicker options like the Bella fabric. This one is also made of only natural fibers – linen and cotton. Max Cotton and Canal are also great fabrics. The Canal has a more pronounced texture and a bit of shine. And of course, our favorite all-time classic – the Velvet. It makes for incredibly alluring trendy looking cushions to add luxury to your space.
Consider the room where you will be using the cushion. While Velvet will be perfect for the living room and for the bedroom it may be a magnet for crumbles in the kitchen.
With all the available color options we have to offer, it’s difficult for us to pick a favourite. We guess you feel that way too. A good piece of advice is to look at the room where your new cushion is going to go and jot down the two of the most repetitive colors in the room. Look online for a good color combo with those two and you will have a better idea of what colors will be the greatest option for your cushion.
Consider the design that will work best for you: tufted or non-tufted cushion
You’ve probably already stumbled upon our two main cushion design options: tufted cushion and non-tufted cushion. So, what’s the difference, and which one should you pick?
As beautiful as tufting is, it is in fact a structural part of cotton-filled cushions. It is intended to keep the cotton filling in place, instead of shifting around and making the cushion uneven. Therefore even the so-called ‘non-tufted’ cushions have tufting. But to make the outer surfaces flat, we make a tufted insert and then place a zip-off cover over. The bonus you get – easily removable cover to wash whenever necessary!
If you want to remove the cotton filling to machine wash the cover of tufted cushions, you need to snip all tufts and re-tuft them after. We include a needle and thread with all tufted items, so don’t worry about that. And it’s quite easy as well – similar to sewing a button. However, most of the time you will be able to spot clean the cover, just like you would spot clean a couch.
So, the non-tufted design may be your easiest option for a cushion if you have little children in the house or a messy pet or if you need the cushions for a kitchen nook or dining area.
Think about the optimal thickness of the cushion you need
The thickness of the cushion is in fact a question of both comfort and looks.
Obviously, thicker cushions offer more give and thus feel softer. So, they’re great for seats you will be spending a lot of time in. Have in mind, however, that our cotton-filled cushions are densely stuffed so even at 2” they will offer plenty of support.
The other thing to consider is the size of the seat. Larger seats normally look better with thicker cushions. But that proportion is completely up to your liking. You may prefer a thinner, slicker-looking cushion, or a very chunky piece to make a bold statement.
We can create everything from 1” to 4”. This ensures they hold up their shape better with time due to the high pressures from sitting. And last you longer!
For daybed cushions or a cushion that is used for both sitting and sleeping, we would recommend 4″ thickness, to support the curves of the body while laying.
We hope you are all set now and ready to start dreaming of the perfect cushion for your window bay area. Here are some of our recent projects.
We cannot wait to start working on yours! And don’t forget that crafting your Cottoned cushion we’ll give you the choice of choosing the finishing details as well: the tufts design and the piping.
